We use ft as a symbol of a foot. It is a unit for measurement. Though it is not a formal unit, people use this in their daily life as an informal unit. This is the base unit of FPS (Foot Pound Second) system. Foot is popular for measuring the height of people. A yard contains three feet and a foot contains 12 inches. Now SI unit is the formal unit and in this system meter is the base unit for the measurement of length. Cm is the symbol of centimeter. It is a unit which can be used for measuring a little distance or length. Centimeter is the base unit of CGS (Centimeter Gram Second) system. It was a popular unit before SI but at present it is not used formally. People use cm when there is no need of measuring a long distance. We should know about every unit for our daily purpose. If one can't remember a unit, he/ she will be able to find out that by a calculation. The calculation method is so easy that anyone can do this. There is a relation between centimeter and meter. We can see a relation between meter and foot. So we can calculate 5 feet into centimeter by following any of the two processes. One can do this directly if the relation between foot and centimeter is known to him. We know that one foot is equal to 30.48 centimeter. So we calculate it into 5 feet easily.
1 foot= 30.48 cm (approximately but actually 30.4785 cm) So, 5 feet= 30.48*5= 152.40 cm
If we don't know the direct relation between ft and cm, then we can use an indirect process. We can start from inches. As one foot contains 12 inches and so five feet contain 60 inches. Again one inch contains 2.54 cm and so 60 inches contain 60*2.54=152.4 cm. So the relation can be like this- 5 feet= 60 inches= 152.4 cm We can do this by calculating foot into meter or millimeter because there is a simple relation between meter and centimeter, millimeter and centimeter. The calculation process among different units is not complicated. It can be done easily. But we need to know some relation among the measuring units. If you don't know the relation, it will be quite difficult for you at the time of doing calculation. You can know the SI unit only but you will be in trouble at the time of measuring any short length. So try your best to know all the measuring units. 5 ft to cm |
